Choose your installer
The unit is half the job - the install is the other half. Our own background-checked crews measure, set, seal and insulate every opening, and they know the lines we quote inside and out because they install them every week.

PGT Window Replacement: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
If your PGT window has failed, Hale Windows Torrance stocks and installs PGT-compatible replacement windows and parts, typically between $450 and $1,850 per opening depending on glass package, frame condition, and series. Most PGT replacements are done same-day once the window is measured and in hand, and we quote a written price before any work begins. The way homeowners usually find us: a window won’t close, a seal has failed and the glass fogs, or a slider has started grinding. Spencer Odell, our owner, will tell you straight if the whole sash needs replacing or just the glass, the balance, or a roller assembly.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We work on the full PGT lineup you’re likely to have in a Torrance home: the 300 Series, 400 Series, 500 Series, 700 Series, WinGuard impact-rated, and PGT’s older Sovereign and SpectraGuard lines still found in South Bay homes built in the 1990s and 2000s. The right part depends on two things: the series label etched into the corner of the glass spacer or printed on the frame sticker, and the exact sash dimensions. PGT’s biggest gotcha is that a 500 Series fixed panel and a 700 Series fixed panel can look identical from six feet away but use different glazing beads and different glass thickness tolerances. If the sticker is gone, we measure the glass thickness and the bead profile on-site. For PGT specifically, we recommend OEM or PGT-authorized equivalents for impact-rated WinGuard glass: the lamination and edge seal on those units are engineered to work together as a system, and an aftermarket glass pack that’s even 1/16 inch off can void the product approval. For non-impact 300 and 400 Series, quality aftermarket glass with the same low-E and Argon specs is often the smarter money, typically $80 to $140 less than OEM without any durability difference in coastal Torrance conditions. We’re an independent service provider, not a PGT dealer, which means we quote whatever is actually right for your window, not whatever one brand pushes.
Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing
- Fog between the glass. The seal around the insulated glass unit (IGU) has broken. Torrance’s wide temperature swings between coastal mornings and hot inland afternoons expand and contract the seal, and once moisture gets in, it never leaves. Glass replacement, not whole-window replacement, is usually the fix.
- Window won’t stay open. The block-and-tackle or spiral balance inside the jamb has lost tension or snapped. This is a wear part with a real lifespan, and in PGT double-hungs from the 1990s, the original balances are often done by year 20.
- Slider drags or skips. The rollers under the panel have flattened or the track is packed with South Bay dust and salt air. PGT sliders use one of three roller profiles, and installing the wrong one chews up the track within months.
- You can feel air moving around the closed sash. The weatherstripping has compressed and won’t recover. Coastal air has a way of hardening rubber and urethane weatherstrip faster than the manufacturer’s spec sheet ever admits.
- Lock won’t engage. The frame has shifted slightly, or the keeper and latch are misaligned. On a PGT, the lock hardware is often salvageable, but if the frame itself has sagged, the sash needs to be re-squared before any lock will line up.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Torrance, here’s what we quote and why the range exists:
| Replacement Scope | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| IGU glass replacement (non-impact, 300/400 Series) | $380 – $620 |
| IGU glass replacement (WinGuard impact-rated) | $700 – $1,250 |
| Full sash replacement (PGT 500/700 Series) | $650 – $1,050 |
| Full-frame window replacement (rot or structural issues) | $1,200 – $1,850 |
| Balance, roller, or weatherstrip replacement | $85 – $240 including parts |
Every one of these is a written, line-item quote before we touch the window, so you see parts and labor separately. The range comes from glass package (clear, low-E, or impact), window size, and whether the exterior frame is sound or needs work. Every replacement job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if our work is not right, we make it right, no argument, and no second invoice. If a repair we make fails within a year, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can tighten a loose handle, clear track debris, or align a striker plate without calling anyone. Beyond that, PGT windows hold two hazards a homeowner should not take on alone. The first is glass: a failed IGU is heavy, and removal without the right bead tools risks breaking the pane and cutting the person handling it. The second is the balance system in double-hungs: those springs hold real tension, and releasing one wrong can send the sash and your hand in separate directions. If the window is intake or heavy abuse floors, glass handling and spring work belong to someone who does it every week. Call us at (424) 999-7696 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s worth a service call or something you can handle yourself. Spencer’s rule on every quote: if he wouldn’t put it in his own house, he won’t quote it for yours.
FAQs
A PGT frame installed correctly should last 30 to 40 years, but the glass seal is the shorter-lived piece: expect 12 to 20 years in Torrance’s salt-and-sun exposure. Coastal moisture and UV heat are what kill a seal early, not manufacturing defects. Call (424) 999-7696 if you’re unsure whether the seal has actually failed or you’re just seeing surface condensation.
Yes: failed glass, bad rollers, worn balances, and compressed weatherstripping are all repairable without replacing the whole window. The one exception is frame rot or sash warping, where pieces of the actual structure have failed. We quote the repair first if the repair makes sense, and the written price is what you’ll pay, with no change orders.
A glass replacement or sash swap is usually 60 to 90 minutes per window once we’re on site. A full-frame window replacement runs half a day to a full day, depending on stucco repair around the opening. We pre-order the part or glass before we show up, so there’s no second trip and no surprise discovery on the day.
Our Torrance trucks carry the most common PGT wear parts: rollers, balances, weatherstrip, locks, and glazing beads. Impact-rated WinGuard glass is built to your window’s exact measurements and ordered before we arrive, typically in under a week to a Torrance address. We also keep parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows for South Bay homes with those brands installed.
